Common Concerns & Treatment Benefits
-
Strength, Flexibility & Balance
Through targeted exercises, such as wobble boards, balance balls, and assisted weight-shifting, dogs can regain confidence in their movements and prevent injuries. PT is especially beneficial for dogs recovering from injury, surgery, or neurological conditions, as it helps them rebuild the neuromuscular connections needed for returning them to prime strength, flexibility and balance.
-
Geriatric
Our soulful geriatric dogs, will greatly benefit from management of age-related issues such as arthritis, muscle weakness, and decreased mobility. Gentle, low-impact exercises improve joint flexibility, build strength, and reduce pain, while therapies like manual soft tissue release enhance circulation, relieve tight muscles, and promote relaxation. By improving overall comfort, physical therapy helps senior dogs enjoy a better quality of life and stay active longer.
-
Mobility
Decreased mobility can stem from several issues, not the least of which are neurological conditions such as IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease),DM (Degenerative Myelopathy), Vestibular Disease, Peripheral Neuropathies, stroke or traumatic brain injuries. The goal of PT is to promote recovery and improving quality of life. Techniques like balance exercises and targeted muscle strengthening help restore mobility, rebuild neural connections, and reduce pain. Rehab supports coordination and prevents muscle atrophy, aiding dogs in regaining independence and confidence in their movements. We do custom wheelchair fitting.
-
Knees, Hips and Elbows
Canine physical therapy and specific rehabilitation accelerates healing for CCL (ACL in humans) tears, whether surgically corrected or not. Hip Dysplasia, whether corrected with FHO surgery or not, elbow dysplasia and other orthopedic conditions, by reducing inflammation, improving joint stability, and strengthening surrounding musculature. Additional techniques such as controlled exercises, laser therapy and manual therapy promote tissue repair, restore range of motion, and prevent muscle atrophy. This targeted approach helps dogs recover faster and return to normal activity safely.
-
Arthritis
Arthritis in dogs is not a condition of aging as in humans. Dogs with chronic issues from puppyhood that go unaddressed may result in early onset arthritis as young as 2 years old. Treating arthritis in dogs, focuses on pain management, improving mobility, and maintaining joint function.
Specific therapies such as controlled exercises improve joint flexibility and range of motion, while low-impact movements reduce strain on the joints. Techniques like soft tissue manipulation, laser therapy, and heat/cold therapy help alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and increase circulation, promoting healing. Overall, physical therapy helps dogs with arthritis move more comfortably, keep disease progression in check and maintain a better quality of life.
-
Working and Sporting Dogs
It is essential for keeping working and sporting dogs in peak condition. Through strength training, flexibility exercises, and injury prevention strategies, PT enhances performance and endurance while reducing the risk of injuries. Regular PT sessions ensure these high-energy dogs stay fit, recover quickly, and maintain optimal physical health for their demanding activities.
Vermont Canine PT is focused on the INDEPENDENCE of every dog, no matter their diagnosis. We want to help them enjoy EVERY day to its FULLEST and be the HAPPIEST pup!
Treatments
Skilled Manual Therapies
Hands-on skilled techniques such as myofascial release, joint mobilizations, passive range of motion and trigger point release are performed by a licensed physical therapist to improve joint health, flexibility, mobility, break down scar tissue, decrease pain and reduce inflammation.
Home Exercise Programs
A HEP designed just for your dog goes hand-in-hand with the work your pup does with the canine rehabilitation specialist. Home execution is crucial for your dog’s rehab success. A HEP can significantly improve a dog’s physical health and quality of life when done correctly and consistently.
Laser
Delivered by a licensed physical therapist, laser is a non-invasive modality for acute, subacute and chronic conditions. Laser reduces inflammation, accelerates tissue repair and regeneration, reduces pain and improves circulation. It is a highly effective part of a comprehensive treatment plan to speed recovery and enhance quality of life.
Sensory Integration
With PT intervention to address sensory deficits that present from a neurological disorder, it is likely your dog will have improved motor coordination, balance, proprioception, neuro- plasticity and overall increases in daily functional recovery.
Progressive Therapeutic Exercise
Designed specifically for each dog to address their unique diagnosis. The program is gradually adjusted to match the dog’s progress and needs. It is safe to count on a solid 8 weeks of progressive exercises for a full return to pre-injury level of strength and activity.
Rescue Dogs
Canine physical therapy and rehabilitation can help rescue dogs build trust and confidence by providing gentle, hands-on care in a safe environment. Techniques like massage, balance exercises, and positive reinforcement help reduce stress, improve body awareness, and create positive associations with human interaction. This approach encourages rescue dogs to come out of their shell and feel more secure in their surroundings.
